Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Vestal Police said larceny rates over the past two holiday months in Vestal were low and consistent with previous years.

But, police said that doesn't mean residents should stop paying attention to personal crime prevention.

Lt. Edward Golluscio said even though the holidays are over, a time when larceny rates can increase as people leave gifts in sight, there are still some important tips residents should keep in mind.

One tip is to shred all gift boxes, especially expensive ones, and put them directly in the trash so they are not visible from the street.

Another tip is to be proactive during vacations. Lt. Golluscio said it's vital to make sure all doors are locked and all windows are secure before leaving.

He also said it's a good idea to make it look as though someone is at home.

"Have a neighbor keep an eye on the home," said Golluscio. "Definitely put a hold on the mail and newspaper, or have a neighbor or friend pick those up for you so they are not seen piling up. And if there is a snow storm or there's snow, have someone shovel the driveway or the walkways. You want to give the appearance that someone is home."

He added you can also leave lights or a radio on. Something residents should consider doing every time they leave the house, even if it's just for a short trip out.
