Owego, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Southern Tier residents can take advantage of a statewide program to save on energy costs.

The Home Performance Energy Start Program gives homeowners a free energy consultation.

The Green Jobs-Green New York Coordinator says this can lead to $1,000 in savings each year.

"You can save money on your heating and cooling bills, you'll have a house that's more comfortable and you'll be healthier because in the process of an energy retrofit you can get rid of mold and mildew."

Solvei Blue, an outreach coordinator for Green Jobs Green New York said, "You can save money on your heating and cooling bills, you'll have a house that's more comfortable and you'll be healthier because in the process of an energy retrofit you can get rid of mold and mildew."

The consultation looks at insulation, appliances, boilers and heating.

Plus, it identifies mold problems or carbon dioxide leaks.

The consultation is free for anyone making less than $120,000 per year.

The program also gives grants and loans to homeowners to cut upfront costs in improving their home.
