Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A proposed new law could upset the balance of power between the mayor and city Council.
If you are heading to the polls on Tuesday, you will see an item named "Proposition 1." This proposition was suggested by members of City Council in March.
The purpose of the new law would be to shrink the number of votes needed by the council in order to override the mayor's veto. Currently, three-quarters of council votes are needed for this process. If the proposition is approved, the fraction of necessary votes would decrease to two-thirds.
Mayor Matt Ryan is disappointed by the proposition, saying that it would upset the balance of power.
"City Council have their powers. The mayor, he or she, has their powers and its been there since 1923 and it works. They just overrode three of my vetoes- the last three vetoes," said Ryan.
He stressed that because there was no problem with the current system, there is no reason to change the process.
The measure was sponsored by all council members, and a referendum is required to make the change.
