Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Commuters will be seeing more open roads as construction projects wind down for the winter season. The multi-year prospect mountain project stopped all major construction on Friday.
When it comes to the Prospect Mountain project being put on hold for the winter season, what commuters see is what they will travel through all winter long.
"Pretty much everything is going to stay the way that it is right now," said NYSDOT Regional Director Jack Williams, "And those detours, people have gotten used to them and they are functioning quite well."
Exit 4 will remain closed to traffic on Interstate 81 North and South. Only cars traveling on 17 East can use the exit. 17 East and West bound will keep two lanes open to traffic.
"This project is currently on schedule," Williams said, "And its on budget, this past year we completed almost twice as much work as the first year."
Construction should pick back up between February or March, depending on the weather. Williams said their main focus then will be getting the new bridges ready for traffic.
"It's very important for us to hit those hard in the spring," Williams said, "So that we can get traffic on those structures and then start demolishing those existing structures that traffic is on, because we've got more bridges to build."
Many of this year's improvements focused on building new bridge decks, sound walls, and a soil wall on the side of prospect mountain.
"This year, we accomplished $54 million worth of work which is a significant amount of work," Williams added.
The Department of Transportation attributes much of this year's success to a cooperative community. The number of work zone accidents is down this year compared to last year.
"The public has been responding very well," Williams said, "They divert their trips to other routes which reduces the volume of traffic in our work zone, we can tell that's going on and we are so thankful for that."
The Department of Transportation said they will continue to be active on the Prospect Mountain Construction Project Facebook page with any important updates during the winter season.
