'Real Heroes' honored for efforts
Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Eleven local residents are honored for their heroic acts right here in the Southern Tier. The American Red Cross of the Southern Tier hosted the 4th Annual Real Heroes Breakfast at the Holiday Inn Arena Thursday morning. Daniel Gavin, a lieutenant for the Owego Fire Department, was honored. Gavin was injured during a January house fire and received the fire rescue award for his efforts. "I got recognized for the fire call in Newark Valley where we lost a fire member, Captain Matthew Porcari died in the line of duty on that day, Jan. 21 this year," Gavin said. Another of the recipients was Michelle Day, a project administrator at the Raymond Corp. Day trains employees in first aid and CPR. She has also been on Raymond's first aid team for eight years. "I'd like to thank the company for allowing me to pursue helping people with medical emergencies that occur at work," Day said. Demetrius Colvin of Binghamton received the Youth Good Samaritan award for alerting his whole family to wake up when their family home caught fire back in December. Honorees got the chance to meet with Superstorm Sandy hero Jay Price. Price is a teacher, football coach and volunteer firefighter in New Jersey. He saved around 80 people from flooded homes when Sandy hit.
