Vestal, N.Y. (WBNG Binghamton) Volunteer fire departments, locally and across New York State, tried to increase their staff of firefighters.

Many of these stations were partaking in 'Volunteer Firefighter Recruitment Day,' organized by the Firemen's Association of the State of New York (FASNY).

With a harsh winter and rash of fires that have occurred locally, even into the spring season, the need for volunteer firefighters has become increasingly important.

Vestal Fire Lieutenant Chuck Piffie, said volunteer fire department are important for more reasons than just helping to ensure the safety and security of a community.

"It saves the community a tremendous amount of money. I mean a paid fire service is excellent but you are also paying for it," said Piffie. "Your taxes are quite higher. It would be significant for the Town of Vestal to go to a paid fire department."

Recruitment day ended Saturday at 3 p.m. However, Lieutenant Piffie said the Vestal Fire Department accepts potential new recruits every Monday at 7 p.m.

They offer full training and no prior experience is needed.

Lieutenant Piffie added that most other fire departments offer the same kind of program and he recommends that any one interested contact their local fire department directly.
