Johnson City, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The American Red Cross is asking you to consider giving blood this holiday season and start a new tradition of giving with your family and friends.

The Blood Donation Center in Johnson City held a blood drive and will be open throughout the holiday season in hope that they can get a surge of donations before the end of the year.

The Donation Center is capable of performing whole blood, double red, and platelets donations.

The Red Cross typically struggles getting donations during the holiday season but they're making an extra effort this year due to blood drives being canceled at Super Storm Sandy devastated areas.

"With the hurricane a few weeks ago, a lot of our supplies was directed down there because a lot of the drives were canceled and the region has to make up for other areas," said Sheila VanDusen of the American Red Cross.

All donors on Thursday received a miniature apple pie as a special snack for donating on Thanksgiving.

If you want to donate you can just walk-in or schedule an appointment by calling 1-800-Red-Cross.
