(WBNG Binghamton) A new pilot program will allow electric trolling motors for fishing on Cannonsville Reservoir in Delaware County.

This is the first time that any kind of motorized boating will be allowed on a city reservoir.

The motors must be powered by sealed, marine-grade batteries and cannot use gasoline or oil.

The new rule requires electric trolling motors must be steam-cleaned by a certified vendor, and must also follow state regulations that require boaters to have a whistle, hand lantern and anchor on board.

Additionally, boats must be registered with the state Department of Motor Vehicles and must have a free permit that can be obtained on the Department of Environmental Protection's website.

The DEP will continue to monitor the water's quality to ensure it does not affect the drinking water supply.

More information about the pilot program can be found on the Watershed Recreation page on the DEP website, nyc.gov/dep.
