(WBNG Binghamton) More than 24 hours after NYS Sen. Thomas Libous was indicted for lying to the FBI, the community spoke out about the indictment and the future of Libous in office.
On Tuesday, Sen. Tom Libous was released on bail after being arraigned before a United States District Court Judge in White Plains.
The FBI said Libous lied about using political influence to get his son a job with a law firm in Westchester County.
On Tuesday night, Libous posted on his Facebook saying, "I've spent the last 26 years working very hard for the people and I'm going to keep to doing that. Like my cancer, I'm not going to let this hold me back. I'm innocent of this charge and I'm going to fight it. Thank you all for your trust and support."
His office said, on Tuesday, that he is innocent and is still planning to run for re-election in November.
Action News reached out to Facebook fans to see if the federal charge has any impact on how they will fill out their ballots this November.
"Yes I will. As long as he takes care of the needs of the people and does good for us then I don't see why he should not be re elected. None of us are perfect!!!" said Cindy Hayman Anthony.
"I'm afraid not, I know many people make jokes about politicians lying, but if this is proved to be true, it takes away all doubt," said Craig LaForte.
Mary Kennedy McDowell said, “Absolutely! He is a great Senator. Besides: Innocent until proven guilty."
Nick Kylm hasn't made an official decision yet, but said, "I'm leaning toward no, but will reserve final decision until more facts are made public"
Libous will head back to court on September 3.
Just hours after hearing of Sen. Libous' indictment, Action News learned two people intend to throw their hats into the race for the state senate seat: Anndrea Starzak and Denver Jones.
