Town of Union, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A new form of healing therapy is officially open to the Southern Tier.

The Spa at Traditions is celebrating the completion and opening of its new salt sanctuary.

It's the first salt cave in the Northeast United States.

It's a form of therapy used more commonly in Europe, and it can treat anything from respiratory illness to skin irritation.

Guests sit and relax in the salt cave for 50 minutes.

A Halogenerator blows salt aerosol into the room, and the salt's natural healing powers go to work.

"The environment in the room, just to begin with, is anti-bacterial, because of the properties of salt, and it's very low humidity. That dry air reaches down deep into the respiratory airways," said Manager Matt Walsh.

Walsh says salt helps clear and prevent inflammation of breathing airways.
