Town of Nanticoke NY (WBNG Binghamton) A student kicking and punching a seat on a Whitney Point bus is what caused the driver to pull off the road and slide into the ditch.

The accident happened along Driscoll Road in the Town of Nanticoke Monday afternoon.

The bus was driving students home from the Whitney Point Central School District.

New York State Police said the driver, Cheryl Maxson, 49, was trying to pull to the side of the road because a student was punching and kicking the seat around him. The bus sank into the snow causing it to tip towards its right side before coming to a rest against a utility pole.

"The sides of the roads are a little hard to judge where there's road and where the ditches have been filled with snow," said Patricia Follette, superintendent of the Whiney Point Central School District.

Parents of the 21 students on the bus were called to the scene of the accident to pick up their children.

"We were fortunately in a meeting," said Follette. "We had three of our school nurses available which we brought to the scene."

Several ambulances responded to the scene to check on the students. State Police said a few had minor injuries consisting of bumps and bruises.

NYSEG was called to the scene to shutdown the power in the area because the power line is stretched to the point of snapping.

The investigation is continuing.
