Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A community project in Vestal is trying to protect the Susquehanna river by bringing awareness to roadside storm drains.
17-year old Josh Lagerwall created the logo "No Dumping, Drains to River" for his eagle scout project.
The concept is to remind people that any water runoff goes directly into the river and can cause harmful environmental effects.
Up until now the town would spray paint marks on the curbside to bring awareness, but Lagerwall said these plaques will stay secured to the storm drain forever.
"Whether it be through the acidity in the rain or mainly through runoff and erosion," Lagerwall said. "Those would get washed off in just about the course of a month. So what we're doing is a more permanent application for a more permanent problem."
Lagerwall had seven groups split up to secure the plaques to all storm drains in the most populated areas of Vestal.
