Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Binghamton University is the third university in New York designated as "Storm Ready," according to the National Weather Service in Binghamton.

The nationwide program focuses on helping communities handle severe weather and flooding.

BU met all six requirements for the distinction, including maintaining a fully-staffed communications center, having four ways to receive weather warnings and three ways to alert students, faculty and staff of weather warnings.

"We use text messaging. A lot of electronic systems from email to list serves to voice-mail on campus phones. We have electronic message boards across campus," said Dave Hubeny, director of emergency management at BU.
