Sikorsky to Close Doors in Horseheads

September 24, 2012 Updated Sep 24, 2012 at 7:51 PM EST

Horseheads, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A major defense contractor here in the Southern Tier says it's closing its doors, which will leave nearly 600 people without a job.

According to our media partners at WENY-TV, Sikorsky cites declining defense budgets and global economic weakness as reasons it's closing its facility in Horseheads.

The 575 people employed there were notified Monday.

Chemung County leaders tell WENY the loss will have a huge ripple effect throughout the area, including the local businesses that supply Sikorsky, along with hotels, restaurant and retail.

The contractor will officially close its doors by the end of the year.
