Union Dale, PA (WBNG Binghamton) While many people listening to the weather forecasts recently were thinking 'oh no,' skiers and Snowboarders were thinking 'oh yes.'
Many consider last ski season a travesty, but Gregg Confer, General Manager of Elk Mountain Ski Resort, disagrees.
"It was a tough year as far as not a lot of snow, but we still managed to keep the trails open," said Confer.
Elk Mountain's sales were down last season about 17 percent, but Confer still considers that a success, all things considered.
They didn't face the same financial crisis as Greek Peak, who filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this year, putting over 1000 jobs at risk.
Both resorts hope to make a strong comeback this season.
"We're certainly hoping that we have a good year this year. We're off to a little slower start this year than two years ago, but with this type of snow it's great. People are having a good time," said Confer.
A good time, indeed. Karen Eden and her husband Bill made the drive from Maryland to ski what they say is the best ski area in Pennsylvania.
"We're ecstatic. We can't wait to hit the slopes. Even though it's 12 o'clock already, we're ready," said Eden.
Joey Griffiths got out a lot last year, but said the quality of the snow wasn't very good. He figures this year to be much better.
"I'm really excited. This is my first time coming and the snow's really great. I like the powder. I think we'll have a lot of good powder all year," said Griffiths.
Greek Peak also has 22 trails open as of Thursday.
