Johnson City, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Main Street in Johnson City is about to get some much-needed sprucing up.

The village has just secured a $457,000 grant to revitalize the downtown area.

Mayor Greg Deemie said this is just what the village needs to remove the blight from the downtown area, and to encourage more businesses to move in.

He said work is already underway, but that this project will take a couple of years.

"It's significant, it's going to make an impact," said Deemie. "It's going to take time. It takes a few years, usually, to get all the projects in place to get them done. "

This is mostly because Johnson City is a historic district.

Mayor Deemie said there are eight projects going on right now.

Most of the work includes façade, roof and interior work.

Johnson City was one of eight municipalities to be chosen for the competitive grant. Mayor Deemie said there was a pool of at least 56 applicants.
