State unemployment sinks, so does number of local jobs

December 19, 2013 Updated Dec 19, 2013 at 7:35 PM EDT

(WBNG Binghamton) Statewide unemployment dipped, but locally, so did the number of jobs.

The New York State Department of Labor released its findings Thursday.

Unemployment in New York dropped from 8.2 percent in Nov. 2012 to 7.4 percent in Nov. 2013.

Things weren't as positive in the Binghamton area.

Seven-hundred jobs were lost in the non-farm category and 200 were lost in the private sector.

As a whole, the amount of private sector jobs increased state-wide by 1.9 percent.

Officials from the state department of labor blame the drop on loss of manufacturing, as well in demographic shifts that affect local schools.
