Albany, NY (WBNG Binghamton) - Governor David Patterson and the State Liquor Authority (SLA) say alcoholic energy drinks will no longer be shipped to New York State.
The announcement comes as the governor and the SLA have reached an agreement with Phuson Products.
By Friday November 19th, Phuson Products will no longer ship their caffeinated alcoholic energy drink Four Loko.
The company will also be required to fund educational programs that raise awareness about the dangers of alcohol and binge drinking.
"New Yorkers deserve to know that the beverages they buy are safe for consumption," Governor Paterson said. "The voluntary agreement reached this weekend between beverage distributors and the State Liquor Authority is an important first step toward permanently removing alcoholic energy drinks from the marketplace. I'll continue to work with the beverage industry to protect the safety of all New Yorkers. I'd like to thank Chairman Rosen for his efforts on this issue and the beverage industry for working with the State to achieve this agreement."
Under this agreement, New York's largest beer distributors have agreed to stop selling and ordering malt products that contain stimulants like caffeine.
They will be given until December 10th to sell remaining their remaining products.
The SLA says there is not enough research to prove whether alcoholic energy drinks are safe.
