Binghamton (WBNG Binghamton) Over 1,000 minds took an odyssey through the field of creative problem solving.

That's how many students from across the state competed at Binghamton University for the Odyssey of the Mind competition.

Unlike your usual academic competition, Odyssey of the Mind focuses on critical thinking skills instead of specific subjects like math and literature.

"We try to give the tools to learn creative problem solving so as these young folks grow up with the problems they face in the future, they'll know how to solve them," said program director Sam Micklus, "We can't even imagine what they'll be faced with."

Students from kindergarten through college worked in teams to solve problems set out by the event.

30 teams will be selected to represent New York in the World Finals.

The winning teams will head to Iowa State from May 23-26.
