(WBNG Binghamton) Guthrie Health and Geisinger Health Systems are teaming up to take an in-depth look at the health impacts of Marcellus Shale gas drilling.

The two companies said it is the first study of its kind.

The study plans to look at the medical histories of hundreds of thousands of their patients who live near the Marcellus shale formation.

Some of the health effects to be studied are asthma, cardiovascular disease and cancer.

The director of Geisinger's Weis Center for Research says some of the data could be released as early as next year.
