Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The Tri-Cities Opera welcomed a new director who comes with decades of experience.

The Tri-Cities Opera Board of Directors announced Thursday morning that Susan Ashbaker is the new general director of the company. Ashbaker has experience in both the opera and music industry.

Ashbaker said she is eager to begin, but knows the job will have its challenges. In the 21st century, Ashbaker said people do not just show up to see operas on their own. Instead, the public needs to be shown why they should attend.

"We have to show them that opera is relevant in everybody's lives. Opera can touch you in a way that is profound and meaningful. It can make you laugh, it can simply be an entertaining experience. Whatever you need, opera can provide," said Ashbaker.

The company also announced its season of Revenge, Revelry and Redemption will kick off this fall.
