Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A Binghamton City School teacher is recognized for his hard work in and out of the classroom.

Dario Vazquez teaches fifth grade at Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School while also coaching boys modified basketball.

Thanks to a two-page essay submitted by one of his students, Vazquez received the "Hometown Hero Teacher Appreciation" at halftime Thursday night of the BU Bearcats game against Albany.

The award is presented by Dunkin Donuts and Binghamton University for those who have a lasting impact on students and student athletes.

"It just meant a lot to me that he took the time outside of his day at home to come up with an essay, about me," said Vazquez.

"I think he's an awesome teacher who is respectful and give you the time to talk to you," said Jordan Brown, the student who nominated his teacher.

To help keep up with his students, Vazquez received a year-supply of coffee.
