(WBNG Binghamton) A 17-year-old was sent to the hospital after he lost consciousnesses behind the wheel and his BMW burst into flames.

Mason Dietzen was traveling on State Route 12 in the town of Chenango when for an unknown reason he lost consciousness, according to the Broome County Sheriff's Office.

His 1986 BMW was traveling southbound when he crossed the northbound lane, hit a sign post and then struck a utility pole.

The sheriff's office said the car immediately caught fire.

Dietzen was able to get out of the vehicle on his own, but his face and mouth were injured in the crash.

He was taken to Wilson Hospital for treatment.

Route 12 was shut down for approximately 40 minutes while the accident was cleared.

Dietzen was issued a ticket for traffic infraction of moving from a lane of travel unsafely.

He's set to answer to that ticket at a later date in the Town of Chenango Court.
