Town of Dickinson, NY (WBNG Binghamton) You may see strays on the loose, but what happens when they're picked up?

They're most likely going to the Broome County Dog Shelter.

It's been servicing the community for more than 50 years, opening in 1956.

"This is a safe place for dogs to have when they are running loose if they get away from their owners. Hopefully owners show up for them, but if not then we do get them ready for the adoption programs," said manger of the shelter, Kelly Conlon.

The shelter runs independently, contracting with 12 municipalities throughout Broome County, generating 2/3 of its finances.

Other funding comes from donations, redemptions and adoption fees.

Between taking in strays and runaways every day, it's always a revolving door of dogs. The shelter is also a temporary home for animals whose owners can't keep them.

"Turn them in here. We have great people looking for dogs. We can match them up with the right dog and hopefully it's a forever thing," Conlon said.

For one of the shelters most active volunteers, seeing the dogs arrive one of his happy moments.

"You see all kinds of animals come, and I like to say I have two happy moments with these animals. One is when they come in. It sounds strange, but I know now they are safe and they will be taken care of. The other happy day is when they leave because they are going to anther happy home," said volunteer Gates Murchi.

The goal for the shelter is to find each dog their forever home.

The shelter will be hosting a Make a Difference Day on June 1.

People can come in, see the dogs and even take some for walks.

The shelter is open to the public 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
