Roscoe, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Long called "Trout Town USA," one town in our area has topped that title with another.
It's a big catch for this small Catskill town.
"It's the birthplace of fly fishing in this country. It has a long, long history," said John Karlowitz of Cherry Hill, NJ.
Now Roscoe can add another title to its list -- the first Ultimate Fishing Town in the USA
"I did vote," said Dave Karlowitz. "I'm glad they won!"
All the anglers who cast lines here cast votes online. The win also reels in a $25,000 grant for the area's streams.
"We've got a number of great rivers here," said Dennis Skarka from Catskill Flies. "We've got the Beaverkill. It's a world-famous river and we've got some great cold water fishing."
"The water's cold because it comes out of the reservoirs, and the fish here are bigger, stronger," John Karlowicz said.
Many people make Roscoe a vacation destination, and say that this award is well-deserved.
"As a young person, I grew up loving fly fishing," Skarka said. "It's a great sport and anyone can do it. It doesn't matter how young you are or how old you are."
"It's a great place to fish," said Murray Reich from New York City. "It's one of the prime fisheries in the United States, and very pleasant people."
This is the prime time of the year to wade in the water for the big one.
"The brown trout is the species up here that most people are after," Karlowitz said, and rainbow trout sometimes pop up here and also along the East Branch of the Delaware and the Willowemoc Creek.
"It's a mecca for anyone who wants to fly fish," Skarka said.
It's hooked a great prize, arguably bigger than the best fish.
Waddington, New York near Ogdensburg was close in the running for the Ultimate Fishing Town with Roscoe.
While Roscoe is known for its trout, Waddington is famous for carp fishing.
