The faces behind the Open

Endicott, NY (WBNG Binghamton) As the sound of golfers teeing off echoed down the fairway Wednesday, the sizzle of the grill wasn't far away.

It's Michele Carr's job to make sure the grill stays hot and drinks stay cold.

"We have the Philly cheesesteak that we've been having for years," said Carr.

She's one of the more than 1,200 volunteers at this year's Dick's Sporting Goods Open.

"I think there are so many people who volunteer here locally that everybody who comes here feels like they're at home," said Carr.

Not too far from home is Sam Parisi. He lives in Kirkwood and volunteers at the caddy shack.

A friend introduced him to volunteering at the Open in 2007. He now checks in the caddies and sells yardage books.

Dick Soovajian works in the player's locker room.

"It's just so nice to be involved in the golf tournament and meeting all of the players," said Soovajian. "They're so nice here in the locker room now. It's a great pleasure."

The tournament's organizers said they couldn't do it without the volunteers.

"It certainly is great for us because if we get a lot of people local it's a lot easier for us to recruit locally than it is to recruit out of town," said Head Marshal Dave Baker. "I have people here from Florida and another couple from California."

Baker said the volunteering is starting to be passed down through generations. Children of volunteers from 30 years ago are now showing up to lend a hand.
