Owego, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Tioga County is one step closer to paying back New York State millions of dollars used to recover from the 2011 flood.

The County is applying for a Community Development Block Grant funded by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The County Legislature held a public meeting today on the recovery grant.

The grant proposes more than $14 million dollars to be available to towns and villages in Tioga County.

The grant will repay New York State for the money given to Tioga County after the flood.

"Any funds left over will be used to come into the community but that's many years down the line," said Ellen Pratt, Tioga County Department of Public Works.

Without the grant, Tioga County would be responsible to pay back 12.5% of the recovery costs provided by New York State.

"It saved Tioga County a lot of money, millions of dollars, so this has been a good program, we're very happy to have it," said Pratt.

The application must be submitted within five days to the CDBG program.
