Town of Chenango Rejects Drilling Moratorium

Town of Chenango, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Leaders in the Town of Chenango Wednesday rejected a push for a local ban of natural gas drilling.

The board rejected the moratorium by a 3-2 vote.

Supervisor Harold Snopek said the original moratorium was to give the town time to complete its comprehensive plan and road preservation plan.

Since it's still not known if or when the Department of Environmental Conservation will start issuing permits for hydraulic fracturing, Snopek says the town still has time to work on those plans.

He says the town will wait for Broome County to complete its road preservation rules so the two plans are cohesive.
