Town of Union, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Town of Union considered the construction of a solar power plant at the old BAE site in Westover Friday..
Town Supervisor Rose Sotak said solar power is the wave of the future and an exciting opportunity for the area.
Gay Canough of ETM Solar Works made the proposal.
She said a solar plant would lower the cost of people's energy bills in the area.
It also could be built flood proof in an area that's flood prone.
The nearest solar power plant is in Long Island.
Both Canough and Scott Lauffer of the Susquehanna Sierra Club said it's time to put Greater Binghamton on the map.
"Were kind of pushing for this idea of hey let's do something interesting," Canough said, "let's do something progressive that's exciting and isn't just the same old same old."
"I also envision very soon that there will be solar panels on rooftops," Lauffer said," we need to go more towards solar and get out of fossil fuels."
Locals have proposed other options for the 600 Main St. location.
Those include a movie theater, shopping center, or even a new branch of Binghamton University.
Sotak said the 28-acre space has room for some of these things as well as a solar power plant.
The goal of the project is to ultimately generate more money to the area.
Sotak said all options are still being considered and she encourages people to keep sending in their ideas.
