Town of Owego (WBNG Binghamton) Monday marked the first day of the 2013 trout and salmon season in New York state. And that's not an April Fools Day joke.
The weather conditions, however, were less than ideal for the opening day of fishing season.
Local rivers and creeks for opening day were high, fast moving and muddy as a result of recent rain.
But not everyone needed to hook the big one to have a good day.
" I don't take anything, I usually put it all back," said William Evans, an angler from Binghamton. "But it's just a peaceful place to be, being one with nature. That kind of thing."
Gov. Andrew Cuomo is encouraging people of all ages to take advantage of fishing opportunities offered at New York's lakes, ponds, streams and creeks.
These efforts are part of the governor's NY Open for Hunting and Fishing initiative, which was launched earlier this year.
