Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The powerball jackpot is now at $550 million, that gives New Yorkers a cash payout of more than $360 million.

There weren't any long lines of people waiting to buy tickets at Cavanaugh's Grocery Store, but almost every customer that entered couldn't resist the urge to pick up at least one.

"OK, give me ten dollars in powerball," said Edward Evans of Binghamton.

Words that rarely come out of Edward Evans' mouth, but today is a special occasion.

"Since the powerball is so high I thought I'd take a chance," said Evans.

And he's not the only one.

"If it gets big enough, I can't ignore it. That's all," said John Doherty of Binghamton.

Even employee's are joining in.

"You have better odds if you buy one ticket than buying nothing," said Meghan DeVries of Conklin.

For a chance to make history.

A ticket for the record-breaking jackpot that keeps on rising.

"I don't know what I would do with that kind of money," said Evans.

Buyers can pick their own numbers or let fate decide.

"Most of the people do quick picks, you know, like ten dollars worth of random numbers," said DeVries.

But powerball players I spoke with had a different strategy.

"Your own numbers stand a better chance of winning, I can't prove it," said Doherty.

"My grand children's birthdays," said Evans.

"I can't give them all to you but 12, 29's, 28s, 27s," said John Vanderlinde of Binghamton.

"I generally play my birthdays of my children, my wife and myself," said Doherty.

To make the perfect combination of five numbers plus the powerball, because, hey, you never know.

"If you never try, you never win," said Evans.

Ticket holders are urged to sign the back of the ticket immediately after purchase to help protect against theft.

New Yorkers have until 9 pm Wednesday night to grab their tickets, and sales in Pennsylvania will end at 11 pm.
