Friendly's restaurants bought, some will close

(WBNG Binghamton) Friendly's Ice Cream will buy franchised Friendly's restaurants from the Kessler Family. It will continue to operate 35 locations throughout upstate New York, but eight will close, including one in Johnson City and another in Vestal.

Friendly’s Ice Cream would not disclose the terms of the deal, which is set to be completed on Wednesday. In a statement, CEO John Maguire said, “We’re happy that this initiative is allowing us to preserve the employment of over 1,300 Friendly’s employees in New York State.

“As we look ahead to the future, we have every intention of maintaining the same level of commitment to these restaurants as the Kessler Family, LLC has had over the years,” Maquire said.

Not included in the purchase are eight Friendly's the Kessler Family will close. In the Southern Tier, those locations include the Oakdale Mall in Johnson City, Vestal Parkway in Vestal, State Route 281 in Cortland and Elmira Road in Ithaca.
