Ithaca, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The Ithaca-Tompkins Regional Airport is slated to loose its control tower. Tuesday, Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand and Charles Schumer urged the head of the Federal Aviation Administration to keep the tower open. The two senators wrote letters to FAA Administrator Michael Huerta, urging him to reverse plans to close the tower, saying that closing it would have a huge impact on local businesses and area universities. Ithaca-Tompkins is one of two airports loosing its tower in New York State, and the only commercial airport. The closure is set for June 15. The FAA must cut $637,000 due to the sequester that took effect in March. Furloughs for air traffic employees took effect Monday, and have already caused delays at airports all across the country.
