(WBNG Binghamton) The unemployment rate in Binghamton fell nearly two percent during the past year. That's according to the state department of labor.

In April of 2014, unemployment in the area sat at 6.1 percent.

That's down from 7.7 percent in April of 2013.

The total number of unemployed workers also fell in the Binghamton area by nearly 1,100 workers.

In New York state, the unemployment fell from 7.4 percent in April of 2013 to 6.1 percent last month.

The country's unemployment sat at 5.9 percent.

Officials at the department of Labor said that those local unemployment numbers represent the lowest point for the month of April since 2008.

Experts believe they could be low due to baby boomers retiring, as well as a discouraged workforce.
