Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The Vestal Fire Department teaches local children about fire safety.

October is National Fire Safety month and the Fire Department is doing what they can to help educate local children on fire safety.

The V.F.D is scheduled to visit five different Vestal schools to present fire safety to kids within the next week.

Members of the Vestal Fire Department and their pal Sparky, showed up at African Road Elementary this Tuesday morning to give the kids an entertaining show on the basics of fire safety.

Vestal Fire Prevention Officer, Ken Fortier says, "We do this every year to help keep children safe and show them how to crawl under smoke, we demonstrate how to dial 9-1-1, and the state message this year is there's two ways out of your house."

Fortier continued to say that the reason fire prevention awareness started was due to the Great Chicago Fire back in October of 1871, which burned parts of the city for over two days.
