Vestal, N.Y. (WBNG Binghamton) The town of Vestal has received approval from the state of New York to move forward with flood buyouts for dozens of homes destroyed two years ago.
Supervisor John Schaffer said Tuesday the town received the final word last week, which will allow it to buy 58 homes damaged beyond repair during the 2011 flood. Schaffer said the number represents 100 percent of homeowners interested in Vestal's buyout program.
"It's been a long process, two years," he said, "But we're finally there."
Letters have been sent to all interested homeowners, Schaffer said, and the buyouts will begin in earnest. Schaffer said eight people will finalize the process starting Wednesday.
After Vestal buys the homes, the town has 90 days to demolish the structures and turn the land into greenspace.
Schaffer said the town will offer the cleared land to adjacent property owners at a discounted price.
