Owego, NY (WBNG Binghamton) An annual picnic in Owego brought generations together through fun, food and local veterans.
For the past eight years, the veterans’ community in Owego has hosted the Owego Veterans-Kids Picnic.
It’s a picnic for the children in our area and many of the children who have been coming to it year after year say it is now something they look forward to during the summer.
It’s a national idea, Veterans-Kids Picnics started back in 1945, at the end of World War 2.
It’s so children have the chance to meet and talk with veterans face to face, but some time over the years the event stopped and now that it has been revived, organizers said it is something they don't want to die again.
The veterans plan all year for this picnic. They even raised money to give away 12 bicycles.
"The best part of this whole thing is when we draw for those bicycles and some young lad or lady wins it and jumps up and down and has a good time. We have purchased all of this equipment you see around you, we have purchased through donations," said Edward Bidwerl, Commander of American Legion Post 401
Organizers said they are hoping to go bigger and better next year.
