Village of Owego looking to extend moratorium

July 17, 2013 Updated Jul 17, 2013 at 11:54 PM EDT

Village of Owego, NY (WBNG Binghamton) It's been almost one year since the village of Owego passed it's moratorium on hydraulic fracturing.

Now village leaders want more time..

The village is looking to extend its moratorium by six months

Mayor Kevin Millar said it would serve as more of a safeguard for the village in the case New York state gives its approval to the natural gas drilling practice.

The moratorium would give the village more time to study the issues and prepare for any impact.

"I think the hope is to review and revise our comprehensive plan with the ultimate goal of protecting our infrastructure and the health and safety of our residents in the village," Millar said.

The village will meet Monday on the issue.
