Waiving the Waiting Period on Some Same-Sex Marriage Applications

Oneonta, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A special waiver will allow some same sex couples to obtain marriage licenses and get married on July 24, 2011.

That's the day that New York's Marriage Equality Act will officially take effect.

The city is offering the opportunity for couples to apply for an Order Authorizing the Immediate Solemnization of Marriage.

Typically, marriage license applications take 24 hours to process.

The City of Oneonta City Clerk's Office will be open Sunday, July 24, from 10:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. to issue marriage license applications.

Hon. John Lambert has agreed to be on call to process these Orders Authorizing Immediate Solemnization, in order to bypass the 24-hour waiting period.

With the marriage license AND immediate solemnization order, same sex couples can get married on Sunday at City Hall or with any eligible officiant.

The city says issuance of the waivers is not guaranteed. It says each request will be reviewed individually "as per the parameters identified in the Domestic Relations Law, Article 3, 13-b."

The Oneonta City Clerk's Office can be reached at (607) 432-6450.
