Waverly, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Sitting in the gym of Waverly High School recently, Bailey Tryon was teaching middle school students about bullying.

She's a part of the school's Leadership Crew. It's a mentoring program to help students get adjusted to life in and out of school.

"It's getting me involved with other students, so I have more relationships with the students and I kind of know what's going on," said Tryon.

Earlier this month, Tryon was honored for her work with the crew with the Student Community Service Award presented by Sen. Tom Libous (R-Binghamton), Broome-Tioga BOCES and WBNG.

"It gets me more excited to get out and volunteer because people actually notice," said Tryon.

On her application for the scholarship, she listed her work with the Leadership Crew, but what helped her get noticed happened 1,600 miles away in Haiti.

In 2010, an earthquake decimated much of Haiti. Shortly after, Tryon packed up her things and headed to the Caribbean to see what she could do.

She went to Ile de La Gonave - an island off the beaches of Haiti.

There, she delivered packaged beans and rice delivering them to the poorest regions of the country.

"It was actually almost scary because of all of the amounts of people that mobbed us for this food," said Tryon.

She's been to Haiti three times, most recently this summer.

That's when she worked at one of the country's orphanages.

She said the country is a far from a full recovery, but there is hope.

"You can see an improvement," said Tryon.

Next year, she is headed to Houghton College. There, she will be studying intercultural studies with the hope of being an English as a second language teacher in Haiti.

"I'm kind of just going to go with the flow," said Tyron. "See what my path is, see where God takes me."
