Town of Dickinson, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) issued a State of Emergency Thursday afternoon. But Broome County says it doesn't mean much for Broome and surrounding counties.
"The State of Emergency declared by the state itself does not include any orders which close any roads within Broome County. So the roads within Broome County are open," said Emergency Services Director Brett Chellis.
Chellis said the State of Emergency allows the state to reallocate money to areas in the state that need it the most, like paying for overtime for the department of transportation, or deploying resources to places like New York City.
It also allows state plows to plow non-state roads.
"We look at the combination of winds, rate of snowfall, and but most importantly whether the local municipalities are able to keep up plowing the roads," Chellis said.
Chellis said the emergency was placed mostly for areas near New York City where they are facing 45 mile-per-hour winds and blizzard-like conditions.
Some roads and highways near there will be closed. Interstate 84 will close from Pennsylvania to Connecticut at midnight Thursday night.
