Edward M. Adams, 94, formerly of Johnson City NY

Edward M. Adams, 94 formerly of Johnson City and Vestal, went to be with his Lord on April 29, 2009. He was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Esther M. Adams and eldest daughter, Alice Anne Gower. He is survived by his daughter, Merry E. Gower (husband, the late Paul F. Gower) of Valencia, CA and his son and daughter-in-law, Richard C. and Lori J. Adams of Apulia Station, NY also six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

“Eddie” graduated from Johnson City High School in 1935, well know for his position as the starting center for the “Maroon Cagers” – Johnson City’s champion basketball team.

Many will remember Ed’s great love for flying. He was honored to serve his country during WWII as a Naval Aviator and Flight Instructor. During the war years, Ed taught more than five hundred civilian, Navy and glider pilots to fly while assigned with the War Training service and the Naval Reserves. He was a member of AMVETS, Post 333 of Endicott and continued flying and instructing for over fifty years.

Employed with IBM, Ed became a member of the IBM’s Quarter Century Club in 1976 and retired a year later from his position as Senior Tool and Gauge Inspector. He was a life-long member for the First Baptist Church in Johnson City and served over the years as Deacon, Trustee and President of the Men’s Sunday School class. He treasured the fellowship of his brothers and sisters in Christ. Ed went to live with his daughter, Merry, in Valencia CA in 2006. His family is grateful to Merry for the loving care she provided her father in the last years of his life.

A funeral service to celebrate Ed’s life will be held on Saturday, May 9th at 10:00am at the Barber Memorial Home Inc., 428 Main Street, Johnson City with Dr. David M. Gower officiating. Interment will follow at Vestal Hills Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the Barber Memorial Home on Saturday at 9:00am until the time of service.
