ACA: Hospitals Prepared For Emergency

By WBNG News

Just minutes after shots rang out in the American Civic Association, local hospitals put emergency plans in place...

As Action News reporter Gabe Osterhout tells us, both Lourdes and Wilson Hospital's were ready to receive the victims.

Just minutes after getting the call about a multiple shooting in Binghamton, the trauma center at Wilson Regional Medical Center in Johnson City sprang into action.

It's the only trauma center in Broome County.

"It's a highly coordinated effort that starts out in the field where the actual incidents occur. We have excellent field supervisors that give us a heads up so we can start preparing," Tvetenstrand says.

Preparations include calling surgeons and other staff members to the Trauma Center.

Tvetenstrand says it can be ready to receive patients in a matter of minutes.

Three victims of the shooting were brought to Wilson Hospital.

"With the high level of coordination we have with Broome County EMS, we have actually been able to take patients right from the ambulance right up to the operating room," says Tvetenstrand.

Lourdes Hospital was also ready to receive victims of the shooting.

While it doesn't have a trauma center, it also put it's emergency plan into place.

That includes calling in extra staff, and making sure the Emergency Room is ready.

"You don't stop your normal flow for what ifs. You get everything ready but you continue to keep the ER flowing because you have sick patients there and you don't want to deprive them of care because your waiting for something else that might be coming in," says Maria Berry, director of emergency services at Lourdes Hospital.

Both hospitals say their emergency plan was executed perfectly.

And when it comes to victims of a shooting, every second counts.

The UHS Trauma Center will host an Emergency Medical School on May 8th and 9th to train first responders for mass-casualty incidents and disasters, like the mass shooting at the American Civic Association.
