New York's Senators Offer Sympathy and Support

By WBNG News

New York's 2 US Senators took a somber tour of the American Civic Association.

Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand also spoke with the men and women who first arrived at the scene Friday.

Here's Action News Reporter Jessica Light.

"They came from every corner of the globe, but they had one thing in common. They wanted to be Americans." says U.S. Senator Charles Schumer.

It was a dream cut short for the 13 people killed during Friday's Massacre in Binghamton.

Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand offer their condolences to the victims and their families.

"When I read the reports about some of the victims, your heart breaks to hear some of their stories." says Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.

Before meeting with the media, the two federal lawmakers heard first hand accounts from first responders at the scene.

They commended the courage and quick-thinking of those responders who brought 37 people to safety.

The Democrats also visited the scene themselves, walking inside the American Civic Association with Mayor Matt Ryan.

"It is so frightening to see that small little room, where there was no place to run and no place to hide. Where they were shot." says Schumer.

But as people struggle to wrap their head around such a violent act, Schumer says the region should be proud of its response.

"The whole world has seen the fortitude, the quiet strength, the unity of the Southern tier." says Schumer.

Now the Senators say they will do everything in their power to help the Southern Tier grieve and recover.

Senator Charles Schumer says he's already working to cut through the bureaucratic red-tape to help bring the victims loved ones to America.

They could also help with any funding needs related to the response and recovery.
