Hong Xiu Mao Marsland Remembered

By WBNG News

Greene is mourning 35 year old Hong Xiu Mao Marsland.

The community came to pay their respects to the American Civic Association shooting victim at the Zion Episcopal Church.

Action News Reporter Jessica Light was there and brings us words of support and sympathy.

It was a morning of tears and prayers inside the Zion Episcopal church in Greene as the community honored Hong Xiu Mao Marsland.

The 35-year old Chinese native was killed instantly at the hands of gunman Jiverly Wong during Friday's shooting at the American Civic Association.

About 100 people came to the service to express their support and sympathy.

Although many people in the community barely knew Hong Xiu herself, they knew her husband David Marsland.

"She was a big support in his work in music." says Hope Spicer, a friend of the husband.

But Spicer says that support went both ways.

The couple was only married for less than a year.

Spicer says David helped Hong Xiu adapt to America and achieve her dreams.

Binghamton Mayor Matt Ryan came to learn more about Hong Xiu, saying its important to honor in the victims in life as well as in death.

"Just a beautiful immigrant story of trying to have things better. And she apparently recently just said you know said 'I have it all.' She said 'I've really achieved my life, what I wanted my life to be.' And unfortunately she was taken from us." says Ryan.

Taken in violence, taken in an act that's almost impossible to understand.

"There's things we'll never understand OK, until that day when all the questions are answered. There's only one who has the answers and his name is God. And we all need to look to him and trust him." says Reverend Doug Harding of Greene.

In times of mourning and remembrance for a woman who worked so hard to live the American Dream.

Another victim was also laid to rest today.

39 year old Lan Ho died in the arms of her husband, Long Huynh, during last week's shooting rampage.

Huynh threw himself over her body in an attempt to protect her.

Huynh was shot in the face and abdomen, and is recovering at Wilson Hospital.

He was able to leave Wilson briefly today for Ho's funeral.

The couple came to the U.S. two years ago to pursue a better life for their 11 year old son and 9 year daughter, who are currently staying with a relative.
