ACA Victim Assistance Center Open

By Julianne Sweeney

There is help for people affected by the American Civic Association tragedy.

The doors of a recovery center are open for not only victims and their families, but for anyone struggling to cope.

Action News Reporter Julianne Sweeney tells us how volunteers are guiding people through this difficult time.

People can turn to the Broome County Health Department for comfort during a time of need.

An Assistance Center is set up inside for victims of the ACA shootings.

"Very emotional family members, rightfully so, coming through the center, and they're being greeted by a lot of human services workers who believe this is their calling." said Crime Victims Assistance Center Executive Director Raini Baudendistel.

Baudendistel says she has already met with close to 35 families impacted.

New York State Crime Victims Board, Southern Tier Red Cross, and Broome County Mental Health Department, along with other agencies have stepped in to help.

"It's been phenomenal because instantly people, people volunteered from all over the state. People called me, e-mailed me and offered assistance." said Broome County Social Services and Mental Health Commissioner.

The recovery center is closed to the media.

But inside the Health Department, volunteers are on hand, ready to counsel victims and their families.

"They can come here and talk about really what they want to talk about, um, grieving is natural and normal. It's a rough process." said Baudendistel.

Volunteers are also coordinating travel plans and lodging for victims whose family live out of state or country.

And, translators are working to break through language barriers.

"We've just gotten calls with helping with, ya know, mobilizing transportation from China to the United States." said Johnson.

The center is open daily and volunteers say they'll continue to answer calls of help until people can come to terms with the tragedy.

The Victim Assistance Center is at the Broome County Health Department at 225 Front street in Binghamton.

It's open daily from 9am to 5pm.

You can also call the Crisis Hotline at 778-3911.

If people don't speak English, translators are available.
