Recovery & Relief For People Impacted By ACA Shooting

By WBNG News

A gunman killed 13 people, wounded 4, and another 37 people escaped physically unharmed.

But all families and survivors of the ACA shooting will need support for a long time to come.

Action News Reporter Julianne Sweeney tells how donation funds will meet their needs.

"There are needs that are popping up that nobody anticipated and that's typical in a tragedy..." said Broome County Council of Churches Executive Director Greg Jenkins.

Jenkins and the Council of Churches are ready to help people impacted by the ACA shooting April 3rd.

The group is raising money to assist with transportation and lodging.

Jenkins says many immigrant survivors have asked to bring their families to Binghamton.

"I think that, that's very important for them to heal...they need their families with them." said Jenkins.

Catholic Charities of Broome County has also set up a fund.

It's using some donations to provide grief counseling.

"We're just here. There's no deadline for people to get to us, but I think between all of the funds, we'll be able to meet the needs." said Catholic Charities Deputy Director Lori Accardi.

The United Way of Broome County wants to help too.

It's forming a committee to oversee how its funds will be used and allocated.

Executive Director Alan Hertel hopes the money can provide future job training for some of the immigrants.

"Maybe some kind of job training needs for someone who's displaced from a position because of this." said Hertel.

The United Way also plans to create academic scholarships for children of victims.

Hertel says this effort would not be possible without the support of the community.

"It's not surprising to me because people are sincerely, genuinely generous. They want to help." said Hertel.

"I think everyone wanted to help in some way." said Accardi.

The generosity is contagious among people and business, whether giving money or contributions of goods or services.
