Future Of The ACA

By WBNG News

After the horrible shootings that killed 13 people plus the gunman, the American Civic Associations services have been on hold.

The agency is now looking for other office space.

As Action News Reporter Caitlin Nuclo tells us, it's just a temporary move until the ACA returns home.

"My day will start with someone from Vietnam and end with somebody from Pakistan or all around the globe. And it's exciting that way," said Director of the ACA, Andrew Baranoski.

For the last 70 years, the American Civic Association has helped thousands of immigrants assimilate into our community.

"We're a small volunteer organization that really provides a niche service," said Baranoski. "No other organizations in the area provide immigration and refugee services and we have that service and folks want to come to civic."

But the deadly shooting at the ACA on April 3rd has put many of those services on hold.

"We're still in mourning," said Baranoski.

But Baranoski says it's not a matter of if the center will reopen but when.

The ACA is looking for a temporary site, until it can return to it's headquarters.

"People relate to that building and relate to the services we tend to there," said President of the ACA Board, Angela Leach.

"I've had an outpouring of support of people wanting us to reopen at that location," said Baranoski.

But before the ACA moves back into the Front Street location.

Repairs need to be done to both the inside and outside of the building.

You can still see signs of the deadly shooting, like these bullet holes in the window of the front classroom.

"It's our home, its our home, we belong there," said Leach.

The front of the ACA is now blooming with flowers, balloons and American flags.

A makeshift memorial which continues to grow in remembrance of the victims.

"We're very grateful and very very thankful to everyone that's helped us, it's a hard time," said Leach.

But Leach says she is confident, the civic center will emerge from this tragedy, even more resilient in their mission to help immigrants live the American Dream.

Baranoski says the ACA is looking at a few potential spots for it's temporary home.

The Broome County Department of Health, the Press Building, BOCES and the First Congregational Church of Binghamton have all offered office space to the center.

Baranoski also says the board is looking into erecting a permanent memorial outside the front street building.
