ACA Survivor Among Honored UHS Volunteers

By WBNG News

A survivor of the shootings at the American Civic Association is honored for her service to the community.

United Health Services held this volunteer luncheon at Traditions at the Glen to thank its hardworking volunteers.

Two women were honored for reaching an impressive milestone: volunteering 13,000 hours.

Those volunteers, who did not attend the luncheon, are Alice Whitcombe and Shirley DeLucia.

DeLucia is the secretary who survived the shootings and called 911 from inside the ACA.

Whitcombe is retiring from service but UHS says DeLucia will return once she's recovered from her injuries.

"Shirley is very community civic minded. She cares a lot about people. She goes out of her way and goes the extra mile to help people as she did in her job, as she did with what happened and as she does in the hospital." says Jeanne Carangelo, from UHS Volunteer Services.

43 new volunteers were also recognized at the luncheon.

UHS says its always looking for new people eager to give back to their community.
