Mirabito Outdoor Classic Begins Build of Outdoor Rink

Syracuse, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Plans and construction are now under way for what is being billed as “The Outdoor Event of the Season.”

The Mirabito Outdoor Classic, sponsored by CITGO, will pit the Binghamton Senators against the Syracuse Crunch, outside, on February 20th at 1:00pm, at the New York State Fairgrounds.

Construction crews have begun the process of preparing a section of the Fairground’s infield to accept the ice surface. Snow has already been removed to allow for the next steps which include leveling where the ice will be and building the rink itself. When final arrangements are completed, seating for over 21,000 fans will be available.

The Mirabito Outdoor Classic, sponsored by CITGO, is the first minor league outdoor hockey game ever played. Outdoor hockey games, which honor the heritage and roots of the sport being played by children on frozen lakes and ponds growing up, have been a proven success at the collegiate level as well as the National Hockey League (NHL) level. The NHL’s Winter Classic is now becoming a yearly event - every New Year’s Day a game is played outside.

A number of organizations, agencies and individuals have helped make the event a reality including Mirabito Energy Products, the title sponsor of the Mirabito Outdoor Classic. The Syracuse Crunch, Senator Charles E. Schumer, New York State, CITGO, Time Warner Cable, Hershey’s and the Mang Insurance Agency have also provided support.

The family-friendly event will be a celebration of hockey in New York State and will recognize all levels of hockey from youth to recreation to professional players.

Tickets are on sale at participating Quickway and Convenience Express Stores, at the Binghamton Senators and Syracuse Crunch offices and via TicketMaster at
